Nathan Cochran of MercyMe and Diving Blind Gets Fully Seymourized

Growing up in the green hills of Columbia, Missouri, music has always been around Nathan Cochran’s family. His father played guitar and sang–and still does–and was a huge influence on him musically. He usually played a Beatles tune, or perhaps a little Jimmy Page solo. Nathan first learned from his dad and then on his own. Sitting in his room for hours on end trying to play what he was hearing from his favorite artists was his best education.
Nathan lived in Columbia until he was 19 and then joined up with the guys from MercyMe. Nathan was a talented musician, a guitarist who knew how to listen. And though the guitar slot was filled, Nathan was asked to join and play bass. Nathan learned quickly, that for him, playing the bass was a fantastically rewarding position. There is something special about holding down the low end. It’s almost a secret that only bass players are in on.
During his time with MercyMe Nathan also continued working on his own music. Even though playing bass is his main gig, he still plays guitar. Diving Blind is a side band he started with friends as another way to express himself creatively. In Diving Blind, Nathan sings lead vocals and plays rhythm guitar.
“I am blessed to say that in just a few years I will have made music my job, for longer than I haven’t! Which in this day and age truly is a blessing.” With MercyMe being one of the world’s top Christian bands, you can say it’s a “match made in heaven!” With a career that has already spanned 17 years, MercyMe is showing no signs of slowing down. Hailing from Grenville, Texas where MercyMe makes their home base, Nathan has a busy life with a wife and three children and two musical endeavors that prove music and passion go together.
We caught up with Nathan and asked him a few questions.
SD: Why did you change out your stock pickups?
Nathan: I felt that the stock pickups that I had lacked some life to them. Changing them to Seymour’s allows me to speak just the way I want. Also, most musicians are after a sound that is their own. Using Seymour Duncan pickups allows my guitars to speak the way they should. They all have their own character, and I want that to come across.Seymour Duncan  pickups don’t hide anything, they give that ‘true’ tone every time.

SD: Which pickups do you use and for which guitars?
Nathan: In my Jazz Basses, I have the SJB-1 Vintage set and in my P-Bass I have the SPB-1 Vintage. In my guitars I have a custom set of Seth Lovers in a Firebird clone, a set of Antiquity Humbuckers in a ’81 Gibson 335, a SJM-3 Quarter-Pound for Jazzmaster, and Phat Cats in another Firebird clone! Love ’em!!

With my Seymour Duncan pickups, I certainly spend less time tweaking my amps and I have more time to just make music. You shouldn’t be hindered by your gear. Having great pickups in a well made guitar takes away most of the guessing game when it comes to getting the tones you want. You want true tone. You want the best. You want Seymour Duncan!
SD: How would you describe your playing?
Nathan: I am a pretty fundamental player. I joke around and say that I am a bit left hand deficient; but really I choose to play for the song. I have never been one to want to strut my stuff on every song. I think that just gets in the way. A song can live and breathe when everyone does their part. It dies when players are only living for their own glory.

About MercyMe:
Since their beginning in 1994, MercyMe has been making music that people can’t seem to get enough of. Whether it is a song of hope and redemption, like their mega hit, “I can Only Imagine,” or a tune to make you dance, MercyMe delivers time and time again.
With a career that has garnered Grammy nominations, two American Music Awards, a Billboard song of the Decade award and sales of over 6 million records, the guys are still going strong, convinced that there is a reason bigger than themselves that they are still making music. And that is just fine with their fans.
About Diving Blind:
Starting with a handful of songs and a get together with friends, Diving Blind makes their first mark on the music scene. Featuring Nathan Cochran of MercyMe on lead vocals and guitar, they have released a four-song EP, but promise that soon, more is on the way. Musically a bit more aggressive than MercyMe, Diving Blind will still find an audience that will not be disappointed.

Quiet Riot Guitarist Alex Grossi Relies on Seymour Duncan Pickups and Pedals

In only a few short years Alex Grossi has become one of the hardest working and sought after rock guitarists in the country. He inked his first recording deal with Atlantic Record with the Boston-based pop rock band Angry Salad in 1999. In support of the record Alex and Angry Salad did over 1000 shows across the country, recorded music for the Quincy Jones produced movie The Smokers, did multiple television appearances as well as recording the theme song for the WB Network drama series DC.
In 2001  he signed with TVT Recording Artists Ignite for two world tours. Upon returning from the tour, Alex was chosen by Elektra Records out of over 75 L.A. area guitarists to be the musical director for one of their new artists Aimee Allen. The band toured and recorded for the better part of 2002.
In 2003 Alex joined up with Hollywood rockers Beautiful Creatures. Shortly thereafter, Alex and BC began writing and recording BC’s second record Duece for JVC Records (Japan) and Spitfire/BMG (U.S.).

In June of 2004 Alex was contacted by Quiet Riot front man Kevin Dubrow to participate in the first annual Bad Boys of Metal Tour which featured Kevin, as well as the late Jani Lane of Warrant, Steven Adler of Guns ‘N Roses and Bang Tango.
In late 2004 Alex was offered the guitar position in Quiet Riot.

SD: Which pickups do you use and for which guitars?
AG: My main touring guitar is a PRS Custom 24, I put Duncan JB humbucker in it a few years ago on a whim and it just sounded perfect. I then outfitted my Les Pauls with them as well.

With Seymour Duncan I have found an improvement in my performance and execution- when your tone is good you tend to have a lot more confidence which makes things flow a lot better.

With Seymour Duncan pickups I get consistency. I am doing a lot of fly dates that require me to use rental backline, so even though I know what amps I am getting, they still do vary from night to night. You know how different amps of the same model tube amp can sound slightly different; with the PRS/Duncan combo at least I know exactly how things are doing to sound on my end every night.

I can always count on Seymour Duncan to bring any guitar to the next level. Almost every guitar I tour with gets loaded with Duncans before it ever hits the stage.

SD: Have you used any of the Seymour Duncan pedals?
AG: Yes, I currently have the Pickup Booster on my pedal board and I love it, not to sound like Nigel Tufnel, but it gives me that “extra push over the cliff” when I need it. I currently don’t own the Shape Shifter and the Deja Vu pedals but I hear great things about them and I am looking forward to trying those pedals as well.

Alex Grossi was born and raised in South Windsor, Connecticut. At age 17 he got a job teaching guitar lessons in East Hartford CT. Upon finishing high school, he moved to Boston where he joined up with Angry Salad. The band was soon signed to Atlantic Records and toured extensively until 2001. Jason Hale, founding member of Chiodos

Seymour Duncan Artist and Their Pickups

Jason Hale – Chiodos

Why did you choose Seymour Duncan  pickups, and how did you decide what to choose?
I chose Seymour  Duncan pickups because I used to read a lot of guitar forums. Everyone  talked about how good they were and what their experiences were with different models.
What do you look for in a pickup?
I  look for an even response on each string for the neck and the bridge pickups. For the bridge, I make sure it does chugs well. And for the  neck, I look for a lead tone that kind of sings on the higher notes.
Do you choose pickups primarily for playing live or for  tracking guitars in the studio?
Primarily, I use them live  because they are extremely consisted and sound great.
How  many guitars do you guys generally take on tour with you? Which  guitars?
On tour I take out at least 3 guitars. One of them being  an ESP WA-600 which is the Will Adlers (from Lamb Of God) signature  guitar. I have a SH13 Dimeucker in that one and it sounds incredible. It  has a lot of bite and works perfect with the type of riffs I play. The other two are Les Paul Studios with a JB (nickel cover) in the bridge position.
Chiodos is an American post-hardcore  band from Davison, Michigan named as a tribute to filmmakers Stephen,  Charles, and Edward Chiodo, responsible for the film Killer Klowns  from Outer Space . Jason Hale and Pat McManaman, 2 of founding  members of Chiodos, released their first full-length album, entitled  All’s Well That Ends Well, on July 26, 2005. Their sophomore  album, Bone Palace Ballet, released two years, debuted at number  5 on the Billboard 200  and number 1 on the Independent Albums  chart. Chiodos third studio album, Illuminaudio, released in  October 2010, features their new lead singer Brandon Bolmer, former  vocalist of Yesterdays Rising as well as new drummer, formerly of  Underminded.

Lance Harvill from Arms Of The Sun gets his crunch from Seymour Duncan

Seymour Duncan Artists, Arms of the Sun
Lance Harvill is a singer/songwriter/guitarist from Dallas, Texas. Aside from fronting vocals and guitar for the rock band, Arms Of The Sun. Lance writes music for television and film and his music can be heard on such shows as Pawn Stars, American Restoration, Celebrity Rehab With Dr Drew, MTV’s True Life, and many more.
Arms Of The Sun was formed in late 2009 when producer Terry Date (Soundgarden, Pantera, Deftones) was asked by Sony/ATV’s Extreme Music to take part in a production music library for film and television with Sir George Martin and other elite producers. Lance Harvill’s music was presented as being the “sound of the ’90s” for Terry Date’s series. Rex Brown of Pantera fame was the glue that brought all of these talented individuals together for the sessions. Upon completion of the sound library, the guys decided to make a project out of the outfit, ultimately resulting in Arms Of The Sun. Lance continues to write for Extreme Music and his music can be heard on many popular TV shows.

Custom Shop Pickups and SFX-01 Pickup Booster

Why did you change out your stock pickups?
My Spector comes with Duncans, but my Les Paul’s needed a little more “body” in the pickups and less brightness. I prefer a very warm mid range with a touch of bottom, and just enough top to slice the cake. To get that I usually have to replace the manufacturer’s stock pickups.
Which pickups do you use and for which guitars?
Along with my Les Pauls and Strats, I have a Spector RX-GT that comes pre-loaded with a Custom Custom and a Pearly Gates. On my black Les Paul Traditional, the Custom Shop wound a pickup set for me based on what I told them I liked, and that was a set of pickups that went more for the big classic rock tones of the ’70s. Not a lot of heat, just beef. I want my amp to put out the heat, when needed, and my pickups to put out well-balanced tone. The Seymour Duncan Custom Shop creates some of the best sounding pickups a player could ask for, the rest is up to one’s fingers at that point.
By dealing with Seymour Duncan, I am dealing with a company and a man who has spent many years studying and dissecting everything to do with nearly every kind of pickup in existence. I can count on their collective experience and innovations to always be ahead of the curve. No matter what kind of guitar I choose to play, Duncan has a pickup for it that emphasizes my sound and style.
With a properly balanced pickup, and by this I mean EQ and output, I have no “fences” boxing me in. When your sound is right, you can express yourself completely without the need to think about it.
How would you describe your playing?
I focus on doing the best I can with the basics. I like to make the most of bending notes and letting them bleed, as well as note choice. I would rather hear three beautiful notes put together properly and with a nice bend added in than I would fifty notes crammed together in blinding speed.
How would you describe your music?
Modern Classic Rock. I like to hear everyone in the band. Bass is just as important as the guitars, and drums as much as vocals. To me, the rock of yesterday was written to allow music to breathe, which made the music more retainable and memorable for the listener, As well as fun to play for people learning an instrument.
Have you used any of the Seymour Duncan pedals?
I’ve been using the Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster to add some extra volume and syrup to my solos. It doesn’t dirty up or color the sound, just simply enhances what you already have going and takes it up a notch. Seymour Duncan pickups are to guitars what cookies are to milk: sweet with just the right amount of crunch!

Circa Guitarist Johnny Bruhns Chooses Seymour Duncan to Expand his Tonal Palette

Virtuoso guitarist and multi-instrumentalist, Johnny Bruhns began his musical education growing up in his native Philadelphia. His mother Catherine, a director of choirs and musicals, imparted her knowledge of vocal technique and music theory to him. Johnny also gains his instrumental prowess from his father’s side of the family as a descendant of classical composer, Nicholas Bruhns, who became an important influence on J.S. Bach. A well known musical force in the Southwest United States, Johnny has performed with many great musicians including Nick D’Virgilio (Spock’s Beard, Tears For Fears, Genesis), Ronnie Ciago (Patrick Moraz, Jaco Pastorius), and Eric Marienthal (Chick Corea), to  name a few.
A veteran of the Southern California Tribute scene, Johnny has played keyboards, bass, guitars and mandolin for several tribute shows from Neil Diamond to Pat Benatar, and currently portrays John Paul Jones in Led-Zepplica. As the bandleader for Roundabout – The American Yes Tribute, Johnny wowed audiences with his energetic note-perfect renditions of all eras of Yes’ guitarists. In 2008, having caught the attention of the Yes organization for his guitar work in Roundabout, he was called to fill in for Steve Howe while the premier progressive rock group were rehearsing in Los Angeles for their upcoming In The Present tour. It was during this period that Johnny also developed a friendship with Yes veterans Billy Sherwood and Tony Kaye. When Billy and Tony found a need for a new guitarist for their side project YOSO, they made the call to Johnny. Johnny had begun recording with the Tennessee-based progressive rock group Glass Hammer at the time, but made the decision to join up with two of his favorite musicians and toured with YOSO on their Elements World Tour. Johnny is now a member of the Post-Yes progressive rock group “Circa,” and is featured on the new Circa studio release, And So On.
Johnny started out with a very inexpensive but well built guitar from Rondo Music and the purpose of the guitar was to get a sound that was close to what Trevor Rabin did with “Owner of A Lonely Heart” on Yes’ 90125 album. For Johnny’s Yes Tribute band, he wanted to not only play the correct notes but nail the sound and tone. While the guitar played well, it just didn’t have very good pickups. Roundabout – The American Yes Tribute was nearing an end so Johnny didn’t get around to changing the pickups. Then the phone call from Billy Sherwood asking Johnny to join YOSO on the Elements World Tour changed everything.  It became evident that this guitar would be great if the pickups were changed, because of its versatility with the HSH configuration. Johnny went to the Seymour Duncan website and found the Tone Chart and Sound Bytes very helpful. Paul Stebner, Johnny’s guitar tech  suggested he put in push-pull pots after some conversation about doing all eras of Yes’ music. Johnny decided on series wiring for the HH configuration, and an SS configuration for the neck pickup. This way he had eleven different pickup configurations. Imagine the versatility! Now that Johnny is also the guitarist for Circa, Seymour Duncan is his preferred pickup. We caught up with Johnny and asked him a couple of questions.

SD: Which pickups do you use and for which guitars?
Johnny: So for the two Douglas WRK590s, I purchased the Alnico Pro II’s for the bridge position, Classic Stack Pluses for the middle position, and Jazz Models for the neck position. I also now use the JB Model in the bridge position of my 2004 Gibson ES 137 Classic, and a Little ’59 in my Fender ’55 Studio Deluxe Steel Guitar, and again, Paul Stebner put in a push-pull pot to give me the humbucker and SS configurations on the Fender. I feel like I have two different steel guitars now! All of these mods were dramatic improvements and with the ability to tap the pickups, my versatility is multiplied over and over.

SD: What is the advantage of your Seymour Duncan pickups?
Johnny: Clearer, more articulate and powerful tone, which is more critical the more I’m heard. It’s kind of a “Catch 22” of sorts. Bottom line is, they are helping me achieve a sound that supports the way I play and the way I feel when I’m performing.  That’s what you’d call “priceless,” you know, when you’re playing well on stage and you really feel it, the audience feels it too.  That’s the advantage hands down. Playing with these pickups has given me more confidence, and for instance, I might hold a bend longer, milking it, knowing I have the sustain, and best tonal response. I also love it when I get compliments on my tone. Tony Kaye told me, “The guitar just sounds really good!” Hearing that from Tony meant a lot to me. I love my Seymour Duncan pickups. The humbucker sound is so smooth and warm.

If you like Contemporary Neo Classic Progressive Rock, you’ll love Circa. Circa was formed in 2006 by veteran Yes rockers Tony Kaye, Billy Sherwood and Alan White with Jimmy Haun on guitars. Jay Shellen (John Payne’s Asia) was featured on the second studio release, Circa HQ. The third studio album And So On has just been released and features Johnny Bruhns on guitars and vocals, and Ronnie Ciago (Brand X, Jaco Pastorius, etc.) on drums.
You can catch Circa live September 3rd at Mexicali Prog, September 4th in Ensenada with more dates coming! Look for concert dates coming soon on the Circa website.

Seymour Duncan Pickup Artists at Vans Warped Tour

Seymour Duncan Arists Invade Warped Tour
Complimenting the blistering Orlando heat were the sets by the Seymour Duncan Warped tour artists. With sweat dripping down the bodies of the crowd in this 106 degree heat as well as the bands on stage, Seymour Duncan pickup artists, set the place on fire! Scorching performances and blazing tone filled the air by such bands as Against Me!, Gym Class Heroes, Simple Plan, Miss May I, We Came as Romans, Pepper, Passafire, The Expedables, The Menzingers, Attack Attack! and more.

Simple Plan Goes D-TAR

Backstage, meeting with the bands and making sure that the Seymour Duncan artists were happy was Jessica Starr along with her sister Kim. Jessica brought a new D-TAR Mama Bear acoustic guitar preamp to Simple Plan’s guitarist, Sebastien who uses it for all of their acoustic sets. The Mama Bear has 16 digital presets to enhance the acoustic sound and emulate the most popular acoustic body styles and shapes. The Mama Bear also has a choice of many different inputs to choose from.

James Bowman

Against Me!, guitarist, James Bowman sporting his new Seymour Duncan pickup booster gushes to Jessica Starr that lots of the guitarists he knows all use and love the Pickup Booster so he just had to get one too. Besides doing what you would expect a pickup booster to do, the Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster can take a single coil pickup and fatten it up to sound like a humbucker.

Disashi

Meeting with Gym Class Heroes venerable guitar slinger, Disashi, as well as bringing some Basslines to Alex, bass and guitar tech with We Came as Romans, and finishing the day off with an after-party thrown by Pepper. It turned out to be a great day of hot music, fun, and musical creativity for all.

First Annual Seymour Duncan Benefit Concert

Steve Miller Band at the Lobero

On July 19, 2011 the legendary Steve Miller Band is coming to Santa Barbara and playing a very special show in the intimate (650 seat) and historic Lobero Theater. Why? For two reasons. First, it’s the Seymour Duncan company’s 35th Anniversary and we wanted to give back to the community with a party that commemorates three and a half decades of helping guitarists find tone that sets them apart. And second, we want to support a very special Santa Barbara-based non-profit called Notes for Notes.

Notes for Notes provides real working music studios for kids to use – for free – for after school music making. Not only do kids come to Notes for Notes and learn how to play instruments, but they learn how to record their music, and how to mix, master, duplicate and promote it. A lot of the Notes for Notes kids are from “at-risk” situations and this provides them with a positive outlet for expression and creativity. Not to mention: how cool it is to be a kid and have a CD with your music on it?

Check out this short video to see what Notes for Notes is doing in our community.

With the proceeds from the Steve Miller Band concert, Notes for Notes is opening facilities in Nashville and beyond. Who knows, a Notes for Notes could be coming to your town to!

Special thanks to Steve Miller, without whom this would not be possible. And thanks also to all the sponsors and the companies and firms that donated products and services to our silent auction. If you want to donate to Notes for Notes, click here.

311 Releases 10th Studio Album

Long time Seymour Duncan artists 311 will be releasing their 10th studio album with an amphitheater tour to follow.  Guitarists Nick Hexum and Tim Mahoney, and bassist P-Nut have used a variety of Seymour Duncan pickups in their instruments over the years. Says Tim, “For the last 15 years, there’s always been some sort of Seymour Duncan pickup in my guitar.” For the new album Nick wanted a fatter single coil P-90 tone and found what he was looking for in our Phat Cats which are P-90 pickups under a humbucker cover. Tim is going back to a true vintage vibe with the Antiquity humbuckers, but he is also using the Custom Shop ’78 Model for something a little hotter and fatter. And P-Nut is using his favorite set up; the SMB-5d and SJ5-3n in his signature Warwick..
