Lance Harvill is a singer/songwriter/guitarist from Dallas, Texas. Aside from fronting vocals and guitar for the rock band, Arms Of The Sun. Lance writes music for television and film and his music can be heard on such shows as Pawn Stars, American Restoration, Celebrity Rehab With Dr Drew, MTV’s True Life, and many more.
Arms Of The Sun was formed in late 2009 when producer Terry Date (Soundgarden, Pantera, Deftones) was asked by Sony/ATV’s Extreme Music to take part in a production music library for film and television with Sir George Martin and other elite producers. Lance Harvill’s music was presented as being the “sound of the ’90s” for Terry Date’s series. Rex Brown of Pantera fame was the glue that brought all of these talented individuals together for the sessions. Upon completion of the sound library, the guys decided to make a project out of the outfit, ultimately resulting in Arms Of The Sun. Lance continues to write for Extreme Music and his music can be heard on many popular TV shows.

Why did you change out your stock pickups?
My Spector comes with Duncans, but my Les Paul’s needed a little more “body” in the pickups and less brightness. I prefer a very warm mid range with a touch of bottom, and just enough top to slice the cake. To get that I usually have to replace the manufacturer’s stock pickups.
Which pickups do you use and for which guitars?
Along with my Les Pauls and Strats, I have a Spector RX-GT that comes pre-loaded with a Custom Custom and a Pearly Gates. On my black Les Paul Traditional, the Custom Shop wound a pickup set for me based on what I told them I liked, and that was a set of pickups that went more for the big classic rock tones of the ’70s. Not a lot of heat, just beef. I want my amp to put out the heat, when needed, and my pickups to put out well-balanced tone. The Seymour Duncan Custom Shop creates some of the best sounding pickups a player could ask for, the rest is up to one’s fingers at that point.
By dealing with Seymour Duncan, I am dealing with a company and a man who has spent many years studying and dissecting everything to do with nearly every kind of pickup in existence. I can count on their collective experience and innovations to always be ahead of the curve. No matter what kind of guitar I choose to play, Duncan has a pickup for it that emphasizes my sound and style.
With a properly balanced pickup, and by this I mean EQ and output, I have no “fences” boxing me in. When your sound is right, you can express yourself completely without the need to think about it.
How would you describe your playing?
I focus on doing the best I can with the basics. I like to make the most of bending notes and letting them bleed, as well as note choice. I would rather hear three beautiful notes put together properly and with a nice bend added in than I would fifty notes crammed together in blinding speed.
How would you describe your music?
Modern Classic Rock. I like to hear everyone in the band. Bass is just as important as the guitars, and drums as much as vocals. To me, the rock of yesterday was written to allow music to breathe, which made the music more retainable and memorable for the listener, As well as fun to play for people learning an instrument.
Have you used any of the Seymour Duncan pedals?
I’ve been using the Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster to add some extra volume and syrup to my solos. It doesn’t dirty up or color the sound, just simply enhances what you already have going and takes it up a notch.
