Friends of SD: Sinuous Guitars

Last Updated on January 29th, 2020

No, your eyes are not deceiving you. The guitar above has not been left out in the sun and is not melting. What you are seeing is the ergonomic design of Greg Opatik and the flagship instrument of his new company Sinuous Guitars from Grand Rapids, Michigan.

While focusing on the inherent shortfalls of traditional designs, Greg’s background in industrial design combined with his love of guitars in his first model he is calling the SD-22.

Throw Me a Curve

vintageAs someone who loves the idea of mixing ergonomic design and guitars, I was pretty excited to see the first pictures of the SD-22. The back of the body has a convex curve at the bridge end to fit against your belly, without a sharp edge poking you in the ribs. But it was the top horn that really got me. Greg says, “I rounded down the upper guitar body so severely it minimized any wrapping of your right arm around the body to play it, your arm just simply rests on the guitar body bringing that strumming hand right to the strings.” In fact, it works so well he received US Patents for it. The guitar ‘wraps around’ your body eliminating the need for constant adjustment to avoid fatigue common in other designs.

Wood is Good

burlSinuous Guitar’s design isn’t the only thing they have going for them. They use a beautiful selection of woods making their guitars as beautiful as they are functional. Many guitarists are drawn to a guitar’s looks before they ever pick them up and plug them in. While using poplar as a base, Greg uses many different kinds of timbers to personalize each guitar, from flame maple to figured walnut. You can order your guitar with maple or rosewood fingerboards, a painted or clear-coated neck, and black, gold, or chrome hardware. Guitars feature a single volume and tone (with push/push coil split) as well as a 3-position switch. Necks are bolt-on, and bridge and tuners are made by Hipshot. Of course, all guitars feature Seymour Duncan pickups. You can discuss your choice of pickups with Sinuous Guitars and get recommendations for your style of music and the type of wood you have chosen. So far, his guitars feature 2 humbuckers, and they are available covered or uncovered in black, gold, or chrome.. If you have any custom requirements such as fret size, special wood types, or hardware, you can ask for a quote using this form.

From the Mouth of the Maker

I recently asked Greg some questions about his designs and his preference for Seymour Duncan as his pickups of choice in his ultra-modern designs.

What problems with conventional-bodied guitars does your design address?
The human body is not flat, that’s why many guitars have tummy cut outs and a spot for your strumming arm to rest.  Our design, made possible by our innovative manufacturing process, takes those curves a step (or two) further, resulting in two patents and a better fit for all body types. Many people inadvertently have to move their elbow out and around into an unnatural position to go around the guitar body. Sinuous guitars are contoured to wrap around and roll away from your body where needed for comfort, and to get your playing hand easily and comfortably to the strings.
Handsome guitars are a dime a dozen, and while our product is aesthetically very pleasing, its not all about the looks. Every line you see has a well thought out function. We developed these curves around the human body, which of course comes in many different shapes and sizes, and then we tested, tested, and tested some more. We listened at all levels of guitar playing, from the garage band next door to getting John Mayer’s input. In the end we landed where it made the most sense to everyone, on the most obvious and natural shape.
It looks like you offer one model with many options, is this correct?
SD-22 refers to Sinuous Double cutaway with two humbuckers. We plan to have an SS model, which would be the Sinuous Single cutaway with multiple pickup configurations, in the future.
Also in the works is a 7 string model.
Is the shape of the Sinuous Guitar easy to get used to?
Most people who pick up a Sinuous Guitar describe the shape as feeling very natural, or as we like to say, it possesses a certain “way-it-should-be-ness”. So really, do you have to get used to anything that is more comfortable? It happens the instant you bring it to your body. We did not set out to do something crazy.  Just to work on the details of the electric guitar that enhance the intimate relationship guitar players have with their instruments.
I hear you are also working on an amp. Can you tell us about that?
You can leave your guitar in a living room because it brings color and an elegant shape to the room but the amplifier never quite looks right in the same area.  We are designing an amplifier that will match the guitars finish and also function as a stool or small table that your significant other will allow you to keep in the room with the guitar.
What makes Seymour Duncan pickups a perfect match for your guitars?
We design, engineer, and build instruments with craftsmanship in mind during the entire process. At the end of the build, tone has got to be there. We love all the options.
