BAKITHI KUMALO

The word prodigy comes to mind when talking about bass player Bakithi Kumalo. A native of Soweto Township outside Johannesburg, South Africa, his professional musical career began at age seven playing in his uncle’s band. Since then, he’s recorded and/or toured with the likes of Gloria Estefan, Chaka Khan, Eileen Ivers, Randy Brecker, Hugh Masekela, Harry Belafonte, Josh Groban and Chris Botti although he might be best remembered for his distinctive fretless bass lines on Paul Simon’s 1985 huge smash ‘Graceland’ album. Bakithi plays a variety of instruments with various Basslines pickups including the ASB2-5S, ASB2-6s, and APJ-2 Lightnin’ Rods for P-J Bass. His newest solo release “Transmigration” displays Bakithi’s multifaceted talent featuring a variety of jazz-infused grooves covering contemporary offerings, R&B funk tunes and acoustic jazz bass selections as well as an incredible all-out African rhythm jam.
