‘Principal Skinner’ is the name of one of Joe Bonamassa’s most prized guitars, a 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard, serial number # 9-1951. It’s had four owners in its lifetime, staying in the one family from 1959 to 2006 before finding its way into Joe’s hands in 2011. If you’ve heard it you’d know that it has a lot of magic in it.
Now you can bring some of that magic into your own guitar with the Joe Bonamassa Signature Skinner Burst Pickup Set from the Seymour Duncan Custom Shop. These pickups are an exact replica of the original PAF humbuckers in Principal Skinner, and they’re wound on the very same historic Leesona machine that wound the originals.
“Many factors go into the sound of a real 1959 Sunburst Les Paul, but these pickups will get you the clarity and the growl of this guitar without the wallet-busting price tag of an original 1959,” Joe says. “I was immediately impressed by the similarities – the balance between the front pickup and the lead pickup are nearly identical.”
The pickups use Alnico 3 magnets, period-correct butyrate bobbins, lightly antiqued nickel-silver covers and maple spacers. Each of the 800 numbered sets will be hand signed by Seymour W. Duncan and Joe Bonamassa, and one lucky owner will win a Gibson Les Paul ’50s Tribute guitar signed by Joe and featuring a set of these pickups already installed.
“Joe is an amazing artist and an esteemed member of the Seymour Duncan family,” says Max Gutnik, SVP of Products and CRO. “We are very excited to work with him on a new set of pickups so close to his heart. We look forward to bringing the Principal Skinner signature sound to guitar players everywhere.”
